ZOTAC's Foray Into The SSD Market Is Quite A Stunner - SONIX 480GB PCIe SSD Launched

ZOTAC had just recently launched it's premium collection of SSDs in three capacities; 120GB, 240GB and 480GB. Those have already been reviewed and won multiple awards for their speed, looks and pricing including the coveted Tweaktown's Best Value award. However we have even bigger news!

ZOTAC has launched its first ever PCI Express based SSD drive. We have been told that the new NVMe-based drive will be known as SONIX "The Silent Silver Bullet". The NVMe protocol is the fastest interface for non-volatile memory to date. The new drive is set to target enthusiasts and regular users alike and will be attractive for pursuits of intense gaming and enhanced productivity. As most of us already know PCIe interface offers far greater performance than the same chunk of NAND in a 2.5-inch SATA form factor. Specifically ZOTAC has claimed "read and write speeds up to four times," better than a 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

The ZOTAC SONIX 480GB PCIe SSD offers the following key specifications:

ProductZotac SONIX
Form Factor Add-in Card

DRAM 512MB DDR3
Flash Toshiba 15nm MLC 3,000 P/E Cycle
Capacity 480GB
Sequential Read Up to 2,600 MB/s
Sequential Write Up to 1,300 MB/s
Endurance 698 TBW
MTBF 2,000,000 Hours

SONIX is a very interesting entry to the SSD segment due to a variety of reasons. It appears to be the first drive based on the much talked about Phison's PS5007-E7 controller. The E7 utilizes the NVMe protocol just like Intel's SSD 750 and Samsung's 950 Pro/SM951-NVMe SSDs. By virtue of the add-in card form factor, ZOTAC doesn't have to skimp on power limits, something that restricts M.2 form factor SSDs. The form factor also allows ZOTAC to cool the E7 controller with a heatsink, something the PCI-SIG didn't include space for in the M.2 specifications.

As with any other component in your PC, speed isn't the be all end all. Reliability is a major concern and ZOTAC has engineered the SONIX to offer reliability and durability with technologies such as End-to-end Data Path Protection and Dynamic Wear Leveling. The SONIX 480GB drive has a quoted MTBF of 2,000,000 hours. ZOTAC bundles its new PCIe SSD with both standard and low profile brackets and the flash storage chips are protected in a durable and stylishly minimal perforated metal housing/shroud.

We are anxiously waiting for the ZOTAC SONIX to be available at our retail outlets in Pakistan. The sooner the better, as this drive to a must have!
