Computer Monitors

Monitors are probably one of the most important parts of any computer build. No matter how powerful your system is, if you don’t have a good monitor, you will be missing out on the visual experience a good monitor can offer. From maximum pixel density to minimum response time, there are a lot of features that make up a great monitor. Popular monitor manufacturers include ASUS, Samsung, BenQ, MSI, Viewsonic, Dell, LG and Acer.

What is monitor resolution?

Monitor resolution refers to the number of pixels displayed on the monitor screen. Common resolutions include: HD: 1280 x 720 pixels Full HD: 1920 x 1080 pixels 2K: 2560 x 1440 pixels 4K: 3840 x 2160 pixels.

What is screen refresh rate?

Screen refresh rate is the number of times your screen updates the image per second. For example a 60 Hz refresh rate means that the screen updates the image 60 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the visual experience is. When it comes to fast paced games such as shooting and racing games, a high refresh rate is a must have! When it comes to gaming screens, there are now 120 Hz, 144 Hz, 165 Hz and even 240 Hz screens available!

What is screen response time?

Screen response time refers to the time it takes a monitor to shift from one colour to another. Generally, it is the time it takes for the screen to go from black to white to black again. It is measured in milliseconds and the conventional range is from 1-10 ms (milliseconds). Gaming monitors usually have a range between 1-3 milliseconds, while graphic design monitors with IPS panels usually have a slightly higher response time.

What are common panel types?

TN Panel: TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are cheap to produce and offer excellent response times, thus making them ideal for budget gaming screens. The drawbacks of TN panels are relatively poor color reproduction, smaller viewing angles and lower contrast ratios. VA Panel: VA (Vertical Alignment) panels offer better color reproduction and wider viewing angles as compared to TN panels, however they usually have a slower response time.

IPS Panels: IPS (In Plane Switching) panels are generally thought to offer the best image quality, color reproduction and viewing angles, however their response time is generally the slowest of the three panel types. They are most suited for graphic design work, however recent advances (offering lower response times) have made them popular for gaming users as well.
